To provide holistic care for cancer treatment, the department of ‘Integrative Oncology’ at Mazumdar Cancer Centre, Narayana Health City (NH Health City), was launched on Tuesday.

Cancer patients will be screened for distress and support from family, after which they will be recommended the appropriate personalised course of treatment at the new facility.

Speaking at a press conference, Dr Santosh Gowda, Head of Integrative Oncology at NH Health City, said: “Besides the regular treatment to fight cancer, the Integrative Oncology team will concentrate on the aspects of mind-body medicine with the objective of overall health and well-being of patients and the immediate family members (caregivers). The patients will also be taught Yoga, meditation and will be given emotional support to fight the disease.”

Handpicked experts

The team comprising the Integrative Oncology department is handpicked as experts will provide the backbone to patient support and care, Gowda said.

Patients will be assessed at different stages of their progression through the treatment process with the required support from the team.

The department also addresses oncology rehabilitation for patients – speech and swallow therapy, physiotherapy, personalised exercise plans and lymphoedema therapy.
