Thicker dab of ink to mark voters this time

Bogus voting in these polls is likely to become impossible with the Election Commission switching to thicker indelible ink to be applied with a special brush on the index finger of a voter’s left hand after he has cast the ballot.

The ink mark, which will go down the nail to cover some portion of the skin on the index finger, will be applied with a brush instead of a wooden stick. Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Chandra Bhushan Kumar said the polling will begin at 8 am on Saturday and continue till 6 pm.

The voting day February 7 and the counting day February 10 has been declared as dry days. “No liquor shops will open on these days and the restaurants and bars serving liquor have also been asked to quit serving liquor on the said days,” the Delhi election office said.


Fifty-eight of the total 70 constituencies are general seats and 12 are reserved for SC/ST. “There are eight to nine Assembly constituencies in each of the nine districts,” the Delhi election office said.

Matiala constituency has the highest number of electorate – 3,47,245, and Chandini Chowk has lowest count with 1,13,777 voters.

There are 11,763 main polling stations located in 2,530 polling premises. “Some 414 auxiliary polling stations have been created. There are 70 Model Polling Stations location (one in each constituency) are plan to be setup with extra facilities for enhancement of voters’ experience,” it said.

“Some 741 polling locations have been identified by Delhi Police critical premises, of which 191 are highly critical.”

Nearly 95,000 government employees have been deployed on election duty. “The deployment is for polling duties, reception of polled electronic voting machines (EVMs), counting, sector officers, expenditure monitoring,” the Delhi election office said.

“The model code of conduct enforcement teams like flying squads, static surveillance teams, video surveillance teams and micro observers at polling stations will also be deployed,” it added.

According to the Delhi election office, some 38 unlicensed arms and weapons have been seized. “As many as 1,352 licensed arms were deposited and 1,134 cartridges were seized. About 173 FIRs have been lodged against political parties,” it added. A total of Rs 32.20 lakh has been seized.

A complaint monitoring and control room at CEO Office in Kashmiri Gate have been functional. “Single window system for receipt and issue of applications for permission for holding political meetings, rallies, processions, vehicle are operational at all offices of returning offices.
