What is interesting is that she started formal training in Hindustani classical music only recently, under Sunil Boregaonkar.

This daughter of Agam Kumar Nigam and Shobha Nigam, says “I’ve been singing all my life but my first real concert was when I sang with Sonu in Dubai. I sang the title song of Fiza. My journey began some seven years ago,” says Neekita, who has lent her voice for tracks in movies such as Pyaare Mohan, Marigold and many hit Telugu films.

Asked how she manages to sing in Telugu, a language she is not conversant in, she says, “I wonder the same thing, especially when Telugu-speaking people come up to me and say, ‘you sound better than a South Indian.” The thing is, the lyricist is always around. They point out the pronunciation. They’ll give you the gist of the song and the context so you can get a feel of the song.”

The working chemistry with Sandeep Chowta evidently helps, too. Talking about him, Nikeeta says, “I’ve worked with him the most and there’s a lot of comfort, he has a great understanding of the female voice.” Chowta is not the only big name she has worked with. Anu Malik, the music director, who introduced her to Hindi film music buffs and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy are among the music directors she has collaborated with.

This Paulo Coelho loving musician says she enjoys performing live and recording equally. “Live shows are about communicating with an audience. You get to see the reaction of the audience immediately. It helps you grow. But recording is nice too. It is a spiritual experience.”

The spiritual aspect of life seems important to her. “I believe in one higher power that created everything. I’m just a medium, a channel,” say Nigam who likes to gift people Conversations with God by Neale Donald.

Asked what the future holds for her, she says, “I have no goals. If there is one, then it’s to have a good time. As for now, I’m working on my music album which is almost ready. I need a couple of more tracks. I might launch a single instead of an album. Singles are doing well, too. I’m getting many acting offers as well. But I think I need to be choosy.
I’m looking for an unconventional role that I feel like doing as soon as I hear about it.”
