B'desh PM arrives today on 4-day visit

It will be Hasina’s first visit to India since her Awami League party won the 2008 parliamentary polls.

Syed Ashraful Islam, Awami League general secretary and a cabinet minister,  said the main objective of the visit is to build a relationship of trust between the two neighbouring countries. “It is a political and strategic visit,” he said.

The two countries are likely to sign an agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, agreement on combating international terrorism, organised crime and illicit drug trafficking, and an agreement on transfer of sentenced persons and few memorandums of understanding during the visit.

Bangladesh may sign an MoU to buy 1,200 MW electricity from India by 2012 to meet her growing demand for power. Dhaka will, however, initially buy 500 MW. New Delhi may also announce its decision to hand over 20 Bangladeshi criminals, who are detained in India.
