A 30-year-old woman suffered 45 per cent burns after she was allegedly set ablaze by her husband following an argument over dowry in west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar on Thursday. The victim was taken to Safdarjung Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment, police said.

The incident took place at the couple’s rented house in Mohan Garden around 9 pm.
Police said Dolly married Jatin Arora on December 6, last year. After the marriage, Jatin had taken a house on rent near his parental house.

“It is alleged that Jatin doused Dolly with kerosene after an argument over a dowry demand. He had been making these demands ever since their marriage,” said a police officer.

Jatin’s family, however, claimed that Dolly sustained the injuries while cooking. Jatin, who works in central Delhi’s Sadar Bazar, was arrested over the statement of Dolly’s family.

“Neighbours claimed that the couple quarrelled regularly and Jatin used to thrash Dolly,” the officer added.

Jatin’s neighbours informed police, while his family members were trying to hide it.
During questioning, Jatin told police that Dolly was cooking dinner when her clothes accidentally caught fire.

Dolly shouted for help, but by the time she could be rescued, she had received severe burns, he claimed.

Distress call

Dolly’s brother Rahul told police that she had called their father at 8.30 pm, and told him to reach her house with other family members.

“She was saying that she would not survive,” Rahul said.
He added that though there had been demands of dowry even after the marriage, Dolly had never informed them about any harassment by her husband and in-laws.

“We found out when their neighbours told us that Dolly was regularly thrashed by Jatin,” Rahul added. A case has been filed with Uttam Nagar police station.
