Mamata to meet PM on March 9

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is slated to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 9, ending an over year-long stand-off between the two leaders.

The Trinamool Congress supremo, who had requested for the appointment in February, would meet the prime minister in New Delhi to discuss “matters of mutual interest”.

The chief minister had said on her Facebook page that she has sent a letter to the Modi for an appointment to stress on the fact that the state’s debt-ridden condition has come across as a major hindrance in carrying forward development projects.  She also said that the state government will ask for financial help from the Centre so that development projects in the state are not stalled.

Mamata informed the state Assembly on Wednesday that the appointment has come through and she will be meeting Modi along with a delegation of Trinamool MPs.

The Chief Minister has been asking for a moratorium on payment of loans to the Centre, which were taken during the Left Front regime, ever since she came to power in 2011. While the total accumulated interest stands at above Rs 25,000 crore, Mamata has failed to get the moratorium during the UPA-II regime despite her being a part of the alliance for some time.

With the Modi government announcing special financial assistance to West Bengal in the 2015 Budget, Mamata is hopeful that her wish will be granted. The stand-off between Mamata and Modi started during the run-up to the Lok Sabha campaign, when the then BJP prime ministerial candidate raised the Saradha scam issue.

The West Bengal chief minister had subsequently threatened to put him behind bars for inciting communal tension.
