For steaming hot momos

When Nepal born Nikhil Agrawal moved to Bengaluru a couple of years ago to pursue his academic interests, he realised that there were no good restaurants serving authentic Nepali food. He felt the ‘momos’ here were no match to the ones he got back home or the ones that were made by his mother.

He met Harish who also shared a similar taste for food, bikes and travel. The two of them hit it off rather well and soon started Bamey's Restro Cafe in Koramangala, a while ago. 

‘Momos’ are a staple diet for people of Nepal and one finds steaming hot ‘momo’ containers, lining the streets of Nepal. Nikhil has tried to replicate that spirit and other dishes peculiar to Nepal in his restaurant. 

The restaurant is popular for ‘Bameys momo platter’ which comes with 12 pieces of momos in four varieties. “Another interesting dish is the ‘thakali’ which is similar to a ‘thali’ and has its origins from the tribes of Dhaulagiri Range in The Himalayas. There are a variety of Chinese and Nepali fusion dishes to choose from,” explains Nikhil. 

Some of the must try dishes are ‘Bhatti ko momo’ also called as ‘Jhol ko momo’ in Nepal where you get ten pieces of steamed ‘momos’ served in a bowl topped with a tomato and cashewnut- based gravy. The ‘Chicken Choyla’  is a form of barbecue chicken where the chicken is first tossed in fire and mixed in a spicy tomato paste. 

Chaat-lovers could dive into ‘Sandheko’  which is a mix of peanuts, soya bean seed, potatoes, ‘Wai Wai instant noodles’ and pieces of chicken. “The cooking method is simple where the ingredients are mixed with chopped onions, tomatoes, green chilli and garlic and ginger.  

The mix is then tossed together in various spices and served with pan tossed rice flakes,” states Nikhil. Some of the other popular dishes among the regulars are ‘Sekuwa’ which is a Nepalese ‘kabab’ preparation which has 12 chunky chicken or mutton pieces which is marinated in the chef’s special ‘masala’ and tossed in the pan and served along with a chilly chutney. 

Nikhil also says that a lot of people come in only for the ‘thakali’ which is a unlimited ‘thali’ consisting of rice, chicken gravy, mixed vegetable gravy, green vegetable, black dal, salad, pickle, curd and papad.
