Taking on an extortionist had proved fatal for a 21-year-old youth in west Delhi’s Ranhola on Holi, police said on Tuesday.

Mohit had succumbed to his injuries while his friend Rahul  suffered serious stab wounds.
Suspect Rakesh Bijliwala, an ex-employee of a BSES contractor, has been arrested for the murder. His accomplices continue to be on the run.

Bijliwala was learnt to have been employed by a BSES contractor for three years till he was fired from the job three months ago.

The contractor was in charge of supplying electricity in the weekly markets in and around Uttam Nagar.

“During that period, he indulged in collecting protection money from unauthorised weekly market vendors and battery-operated lamps providers in those markets,” police said in a release.

The accused continued extorting from the vendors even after being kicked out of the job. However, Bijliwala faced resistance from Rahul who provided battery-operated lamps in the weekly markets.

The extortionist met Rahul while he was celebrating Holi with Mohit and Shiv around 1 pm. When Bijliwala demanded money, Rahul refused which led to a heated exchange between them.

Bijliwala left the spot but returned later with half a dozen friends armed with knives. They repeatedly stabbed Rahul and Mohit. Shiv managed to escape the assault.

Mohit died on the spot of injuries on the neck while Rahul  has been admitted to a hospital.
