Contrary to the policy of the party central command, the Jammu & Kashmir Congress has said it will not stand in the way of Afzal Guru’s remains coming home.

Afzal Guru, convicted for masterminding the attack on Parliament, was hanged on February 9, 2013 in Tihar Jail and buried there.

“(Bringing back) Afzal Guru’s mortal remains has become a humanitarian issue across the country,” the newly appointed state Congress chief G A Mir told reporters here.

“The Congress has the stand that it will not oppose if the Government Of India decides to return the remains,” he said.

He ducked a question on his party’s support to the resolution brought in the state Assembly by independent MLA Sheikh Abdul Rashid over the issue. “We will discuss our strategy in the near future after going through the contents of the resolution,” Mir said.
