A 35-year-old garments shop owner was shot in the chest with a country-made pistol by a man working in a neighbouring shop in east Delhi on Monday.

The victim and his family have claimed that it was an accidental firing. They also alleged that a neighbour had deceitfully left the gun wrapped in a packet at their shop.

The victim received a bullet injury to his chest, but is said to be out of danger. Police have arrested the man who allegedly accidentally fired the shot and the man who had left the weapon at the shop. A case under the Arms Act has been registered with Mansarovar Park police station.

The incident took place around 1 pm on Monday. Brothers Sunny and Hunny own a garments shop in the area and both were present at the store at the time of the shooting.

Just a few minutes prior to the shooting, Avdhesh, a 35-year-old man employed at the neighbouring shop, arrived at their shop and began conversing with them.

“Suddenly, our neighbour Jonu rushed out of his home with a polythene bag holding something inside. He requested us to keep the packet at our shop for five minutes and went away,” victim Hunny’s brother Sunny told police in his statement.
Jonu had left the shop before the brothers could ask him what the packet contained, they claimed.

Meanwhile, a curious Avdhesh wanted to check out the contents of the packet, but the brothers claimed they tried to stop him from opening it.

But Avdhesh opened the packet and found a pistol inside. “The victim claimed that Avdhesh accidentally pressed the trigger while fiddling with the weapon. The bullet pierced Hunny’s chest,” a police officer told Deccan Herald.

Jonu, meanwhile, head the gunshot, rushed to the shop and made away with the gun.

The victim was rushed to a hospital where he is undergoing treatment. Police said they were informed by the hospital staff after which they arrested Jonu and Avdhesh.

Jonu’s antecedents are being verified, said police.
