Constables arrested for accepting bribe

Two police constables, attached to Anekal police station, and an agent were arrested for graft by the Lokayukta police. The constables Manjunath and Prakash had demanded a bribe to release motorcycles seized in a case.

The complainant Gopinath, a resident of Attibele, had approached the Anekal police station to get the motorcycles released. The Anekal police had registered a case under Section 87 of the Karnataka Police Act and seized nine motorcycles. Of them four motorcycles were released and the accused Assistant Station Writer Manjunath and Prakash demanded a bribe of Rs 60,000 to release the remaining five bikes. After negotiation, the accused scaled down the demand to Rs 40,000.

The FIR was registered by the Lokayukta police (Rural) and a trap was laid. The Lokayukta police arrested the agent Santosh, a tea stall owner, while receiving the bribe amount of Rs 40,000 on behalf of the accused.

The agent later handed over Rs 39,500 to Manjunath and kept Rs 500 with himself. The police have arrested all the three accused.
