A 22-year-old woman, who was two months pregnant, suffered miscarriage after a Kannada activist kicked and assaulted her over a land dispute.

The Hebbal police have arrested Govindaraj, a member of Karnataka Rakshana Pade. Anitha, a homemaker and resident of Sammethanahalli near Whitefield, was rushed to hospital as she sustained injuries, the police said.

Anitha hails from Malur in Kolar district. She fell in love with a man, got married to him and moved to Bengaluru a year ago. Anitha’s husband is an electrician.

“There was a dispute between me and my relatives over a piece of land in Malur. I was told about a few organisations who help victims of property disputes. I contacted a telephone local search destination firm in Bengaluru, seeking contacts of such organisations. Sometime later, I got a call from Govindaraj,” Anitha told Deccan Herald.
Govindaraj made Anitha and her mother pledge their ornaments and collected Rs 30,000 from them to help settle the property dispute. However, he did not do anything and distanced himself from Anitha, the police said.

“Anitha contacted me seeking assistance in recovering money from Govindaraj,” Shivashakthi Mahila Sangha chief Umadevi told Deccan Herald.

“I called up Govindaraj and requested him to come to my office on March 19 so that the matter could be amicably resolved. He came along with three women. When I started discussing the matter, Govindaraj abused Anitha in filthy language and attacked her. He kicked her repeatedly and she fell down. Later, all the four went out of the office,” Umadevi said.

Anitha lodged a complaint against Govindaraj and the three women. Based on the complaint, Govindaraj was arrested. Anitha said she suffered injuries all over her body and was hospitalised.

Anitha suffered miscarriage  due to the attack, Umadevi said.
