Jat verdict may delay UPSC results

The Supreme Court verdict scrapping reservation for Jats appears to have put the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC) in a spot as it may have to delay the announcement of those who are selected for interview for the coveted civil services.

Sources said the UPSC was waiting to see whether the Centre would appeal against the verdict.

The UPSC normally announces the result for the civil services main exams around March-end. This time, it has to be postponed.

The results already have been prepared. But the UPSC does not want to publish the results now as it may be counter productive as the government is deliberating whether to appeal against the Supreme Court verdict.

The UPSC has also sought details from Law and Social Justice Ministries about the way forward.

Last week, the Supreme Court quashed the Centre's decision to include Jats in the category of other backward classes to provide them with reservation.

In the Supreme Court, lawyer Jayanth Bhushan on behalf of a pro-reservation Jat organisation on Thursday raised the issue of confusion regarding reservation for students.

He mentioned before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India H L Dattu that several students, who had cleared medical entrance tests, were in trouble, as they did not participate in a counselling session for general category students thinking that they were supposed to attend such sessions for reserved category.

He told the court that the verdict had an effect on their future and asked the court to take a view keeping in mind such considerations. The chief justice asked the lawyer to approach the bench concerned which dealt with the case.

There was an argument that the verdict should be applicable for students from only the next academic session as implementing it right now would create trouble.
