The East Corporation’s safai karamcharis continued their strike on Sunday. Delhi Nagar Nigam Safai Mazdoor Sangh said none of the sanitation workers had received salaries as claimed by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation.

“We met officials to discuss our demand and will meet the commissioner on Monday, but workers continued the strike on Saturday,” it added.

The East Corporation claimed that the garbage has been removed from all the dhalaos under the civic agency with the help of some of the sanitation workers.

“The employees will resume work on Monday,” it said.

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation said that the civic agency was able to clean all dhalaos falling under its limits. “The garbage was lifted at night with the help of some of the sanitation workers,” the East Corporation said in a statement.

“Commissioner Amit Yadav after releasing the salaries to safai karamcharis for February, had appealed to the workers to resume their duties,” it added.

Commissioner Yadav hoped that the rest of the safai karamcharies will get back to work on Monday morning. “And help in streamlining the sanitation services,” it said.

“This step will certainly be in the interest of the citizens and help in putting the system back on its track. It is well known that their role is of vital importance in the process of sanitation,” it added.

On Thursday, over 120 councillors of the three BJP-led corporations – North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) – including senior party leaders marched to the Raj Niwas from Chandi Ram Akhara shouting slogans seeking the release of funds by the Delhi government for the civic agencies.

The East Corporation requires over Rs 100 crore to pay salaries and other benefits to its over 32,000 employees.

Even the North Corporation is in the red and it requires Rs 171 crore to pay salaries and other benefits to its over 70,000 employees.
