Robbers try to uproot ATM, act caught on CCTV camera

A security guard was tied up and an ATM uprooted in outer Delhi’s Kanjhawala in the wee hours of Sunday.

However, the culprits were forced to abandon the plan due to the presence of a PCR van in the area.

As they were planning to drive away with the ATM, they saw the PCR van on patrol and approaching the booth. Before the culprits could return, a passer-by noticed the tied security guard and informed police.

The security guard has been identified as Anil Kumar, 45, a resident of Mahavir Nagar in Kanjhawala. He works with Tiger 4 Security and Detective India. On Sunday, he was posted with an ATM of State Bank of India in Karala village on a 10 pm to 6 am shift.

“Around 2 am, four men armed with country-made pistols gained entry into the ATM booth. They cut off the power supply of the booth and thrashed Anil,” said a police officer.
The gang was there for over 30 minutes, but failed to flee with the machine. They also could not take money from the cash vault, which had Rs 17 lakh at the time.

Anil underwent treatment at Maharishi Valmiki Hospital and a case under section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) of the Indian Penal Code was filed with Kanjhawala police station.

Police have retrieved CCTV footage, but no arrest has been made so far. An initial investigation has found that the CCTV cameras at the ATM were also damaged so that police could not get a clear image of the gang.

“There were three CCTV cameras installed in and outside the ATM booth. The gang managed to damage a camera at the entrance. But two cameras inside the ATM booth have captured the entire incident,” the officer added.
