Former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam, on Tuesday, advised budding engineers to innovate in pace with changing times.

Delivering the valedictory address of the golden jubilee celebrations of Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), here, Kalam said: “Creativity is a process through which we can continously improve ideas and find unique solutions by making gradual alterations and refinements to our works. Innovation and creativity ultimately result in the culture of excellence”.

Speaking on ‘Technology and Societal Transformation’, Kalam said, “Technology is directly benefitting human beings, health, education, safety and other fields. Going by recent studies, we are close to discover a permanent cure for diabetes that is affecting people in large numbers in India”.

Referring to a book ‘Empire of the Mind’, Kalam said, “Compared to yesterday, there is a major shift in today’s world — irrespective of field. Earlier, natural resources defined power while knowledge is the power in present days.

Similarly, hierarchy is replaced by synergy, customers have replaced shareholders, leaders are replaced by team decisions and competitors are replaced by the products”.

The history
Suttur seer Shivaratri Deshikendra Swami recalled the combination of the erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar and the previous pontiff of Suttur Mutt Rajendra Swami, that led to the birth of SJCE in 1963.

When the late seer wanted to start a technical institution, the maharaja readily agreed to part with the land. As a token of gratitude, it was decided to name the institute after the ruler.
