Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday called on Nepalese Ambassador Deepak Kumar Upadhyay to convey the party’s support and to pay condolences to the victims of the earthquake that struck the Himalayan nation last week.

“I wanted to come express my support for people of Nepal,” he told reporters after meeting the Nepalese ambassador at his residence here.

“Over the last week the world has watched in horror as the true scale of the tragedy in Nepal unfolded before us,” Rahul wrote in the visitor’s book at the embassy.

“Some wounds will never heal, but as Nepal faces the hard task of rebuilding each broken life and broken buildings, the people of India stand with you in strength and solidarity,” he said, adding that India will see a stronger, more prosperous and even beautiful Nepal in the years to come.

“(Nepal’s) ingenerable spirit will rise above the present despair and inspire the world,” Rahul wrote.

Recently, Congress president Sonia Gandhi wrote to Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala to express solidarity over the massive earthquake. “I am deeply grieved and shocked by the devastation caused by the massive earthquake in Nepal and the aftershocks that followed.

“The tragic loss of thousands of lives and the enormity of destruction has saddened us. I take this opportunity to assure you of our continued solidarity with your government and support to the people of Nepal in this moment of crisis,” she said.
