Last Updated 03 May 2015, 20:28 IST

Four members of a family were killed when the two motorcycles they were travelling on were hit by an unidentified vehicle in west Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar during the early hours of Sunday.

The deceased include a couple, their five-year-old son and the husband's younger brother.

The couple's two other children were injured in the accident, and are now undergoing treatment.

None of them were wearing helmets, said the police.

The vehicle that hit the two motorcycles, which were parallel to each other, has not been identified yet.

Since the accident took place on a national highway, there was no CCTV camera near the accident site. The nearest CCTV camera was a kilometre away from the accident spot, and the police said its footage was unlikely to provide any clues. No eyewitness has come forward yet.

Deshraj, 32, and his family had been to a relative’s wedding in Alipur on Saturday night. They were returning to their home in Swaroop Nagar on two motorcycles when the accident took place.

Behind Deshraj's sat his wife Kavita, 27, and their two-year-old daughter Kiran.
Deshraj's Yogesh was accompanied by Deshraj’s son Nitin, five, and daughter Sadhna,
three.

Early morning call

The police received a call about the accident from a passer-by at around 5:30 am on Sunday.

“When we reached the National Highway 1 in the Alipur area, we found the six victims on the road and their damaged motorcycles some distance away,” said a police officer, adding that the accident scenario suggested the two-wheelers were running parallel to each other.

No helmet was found at the accident spot.

All six were rushed to hospital, where Deshraj, Kavita and Yogesh were declared dead on arrival.

The children were alive, but in bad shape. They were rushed to the ICU.
Nitin succumbed to his injuries later in the day. The other two children continue to be critical, said the police.

A case against unidentified persons has been registered at the Swaroop Nagar police station.

Natives of Aligarh, the victims had moved to Delhi four years ago. They worked odd jobs to feed their families.
