The hills turn dumpyard

Last Updated 04 May 2015, 14:09 IST

The students of NP Jayan School of Photo Journalism recently went on a photoshooting spree at the Nandi Hills and discovered the sad state that it is in.

A few years back, Nandi Hills was a hot spot for tourists. But now it has become a dumpyard and is in a state of neglect.

On either side of the steps, there are tall trees with trunks that have lush green moss and pale white lichens. There is a playground for children which is completely abandoned. The frame stands like skeleton with missing swings. The bamboo tree houses are like haunted places and ugly to look.

The simian population has now gone down, even their naughtiness seems
to have mellowed. The beauty of the hills is slowly disappearing because of the plastic and food-wrapping foils strewn around by the visitors.

There is a board that reads “This hill is health resort, keep it clean”. But no one seems to be bothered. It’s time that the government, visitors and environmentalists come together to work out strategies and stringent measures to revive the hills from its declining beauty. They should resuscitate life so that the visit to the hills will once again be refreshing. The old grandeur of the hill can be restored by collecting a higher entry fee and conducting a check for plastics and food items.

There should also be a strict vigil to prevent garbage disposal and boards should be erected to create awareness. There should be proper toilet and drinking water facilities for the visitors. The lost glory needs to be retained.
