Child beggar in Gandhi attire rescued

The begging mafia is not sparing the image of Mahatma Gandhi, who proclaimed that a “happy child is nation’s pride”.

A boy dressed as Gandhi, with his body painted in silver, was rescued off the streets of Hyderabad on Sunday.

The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, which saved the 10-year-old child, is planning to save more such children from the clutches of the mafia.

Painted in silver colour, the boy was told to stand at all the major cross roads of the city and beg from dawn to dusk without a break. “If I go back with less amount, then they (mafia) starve me for a day,” the boy told his rescuers.

With the directions of child rights commission, L B Nagar Police Sub Inspector Sudhakar rescued the boy and saw to it that the boy was given a bath and food. The commission, in a statement, said it is gearing up to rescue minors from the begging mafia.

The begging mafia has been employing various methods to attract public sentiment. Cheap chemical colours are used to dress up the children. “The mafia is also forcing children to pose like lord Anjaneya. Cach of the children collect about Rs 300, which is snatched away from them.

The child gets a cup of tea and a bun in return. Such children suffer from skin rashes and itches. They don’t get medical aid,” said Achyuta Rao, member of the commission.
