Armed with the Karnataka High Court’s acquittal order in the disproportionate assets case, AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalitha is all set to become the chief minister of Tamil Nadu again.

Given that her successor  Panneerselvam is currently under attack from the Opposition over poor governance and that the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are scheduled for next year, Jayalalitha’s return to the top seat will come as an enormous relief to her party.

With the ruling in her favour, Jayalalitha can become the chief minister again and can get elected to the Assembly within six months.  There were also strong rumours about the possibility of the AIADMK government opting for a snap polls to cash in on the euphoria over the positive court verdict

Sources from the AIADMK said that Jayalalitha is likely to be sworn in as chief minister on Wednesday. “Since today is ‘Ashtami’ and tomorrow is ‘Navami’ (both considered inauspicious days), our leader will take oath on Wednesday,” a senior AIADMK party functionary said.

Another worker claimed that the AIADMK leader will be sworn-in on May 17, which is a new moon day (Amavasaya), an auspicious day.
