An unidentified man hoodwinked a senior citizen and made off with her gold chain at the BBMP office near Mantri Mall in Malleswaram on Tuesday.

According to the police, the complainant, Pushpa, 58, a resident of Sampangiram Nagar, had been to Victoria hospital for treatment along with her husband. As the couple entered the hospital premises, a man approached them and enquired them about their family details. He told them they could get free treatment under a government scheme and that in order to avail themselves of the benefit, they should get an Above Proverty Line (APL) card done.

He also told them that if they accompanied him, he would get the card done in a couple of hours. The couple agreed and went along with him to the BBMP office in Seshadripuram. As they entered the office, the man told Pushpa to remove her gold chain and appear to be poor to get the APL card.

Pushpa removed her chain, wrapped it in a paper and kept it in her hand bag. However, the miscreant managed to steal the chain from her bag and left the BBMP office telling them he would meet an officer and get back to them. Even after two hours, there was no sign of the man. The anxious couple started looking for him but in vain. When Pushpa opened her bag to take out her mobile phone, she realised her gold chain was missing.

She approached the Seshadripuram police and lodged a complaint.
