A 60-year-old jeweller in east Delhi’s Krishna Nagar was robbed of jewellery and cash worth Rs 5 lakh while he was returning home on Tuesday night.

The three motorcycle-borne robbers also thrashed the jeweller and his servant when they resisted. The victims told police that they were unable to note down the registration number of the robbers’ motorcycle.

A case of robbery has been registered with Krishna Nagar police station. The role of insiders is suspected in the crime and some people are being questioned. Little headway, however, has been made in the case so far.

Victim Sardar Hazara Singh lives with his family in Nirman Vihar and owns a jewellery shop BB Jewellers in Krishna Nagar.

The robbery took place while he was returning home with his servant Ram Charan around 9.30 pm. Singh was riding pillion on a scooter that Charan was riding.

Singh was carrying a black bag that contained Rs 1.5 lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs 3.5 lakh, the victim told police in his complaint.

As they reached B-block of Krishna Nagar, they were suddenly intercepted by three men riding a black motorcycle.

Appearing to be in their early 20s, the youths tried to snatch the bag from Singh’s hands.

Singh resisted their bid and was joined in his effort by Ram, leading to a scuffle between the two groups.

Sensing trouble, one of the robbers asked his accomplice to shoot the jeweller, a police officer told Deccan Herald. A pistol was pulled out by one of them and pointed at Singh’s forehead, prompting him to let go of the bag.

With the victims having surrendered, the robbers physically assaulted them before riding away from the crime spot. The jeweller called the police control room number upon which a police team was sent to their aid.

The victims said they were taken aback by the robbery and assault because of which they could not note down the vehicle’s registration number.
