Woman kills self after hubby asks her not to wear jeans

A newly wed woman killed herself after her husband asked her not to wear jeans.
The incident occurred at Dumri Khas village in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district, about 275 km from here, on Thursday night, according to police sources.

The woman, identified as Jyoti Devi, got married to Suraj Singh ten days back.
Jyoti’s younger sister Nikki, who had accompanied her to Dumri Khas village after the marriage, said her sister had worn jeans on Thursday evening as they all were preparing to go for an outing.

Suraj, after seeing Jyoti, asked her not to wear it as his family members would not like the same. “It (wearing jeans) will bring bad name to the family if the residents of the village see you in jeans,” Singh told Jyoti, according to Nikki.

An upset Jyoti locked herself in her room and a little later she was found hanging from the ceiling fan. Nikki said her sister liked to wear jeans while going out.

Police officials said that Jyoti parents had not lodged any complaint in this regard. They, however, said that the matter was being investigated.

Girls are not allowed to wear jeans in some areas in the state, especially in the Jat dominated western region.
