JOIN US Heavy rain accompanied with thunder and lightning claimed two lives and damaged standing crops in the State on Saturday.
Narayan Jadhav (65) was struck dead by lightning at Desayaratti village in Athani taluk in Belagavi. He was on his way to the cattle shed to tether cows when lightning struck him. More than 3,300 banana plants were razed to ground due to heavy winds in Suttatti village of Athani taluk. More than 40 houses were damaged in the heavy rain in Sogi village of Ballar. Rainwater gushed into low-lying areas.
Koppal
Torrential rains pounded Koppal district on Friday, causing widespread damage to banana plantations. Banana and betel leaves grown in Dambaralli, Katralli, Bisaralli and Hyati Mundaragi. Several houses have been damaged in Karatagi and Navali of Gangavathi taluk.
Joint Director of Agriculture Department Dr Suresh Itnal said Koppal district has received an average rainfall of 13.5 mm, with Koppal hobli alone receiving 84 mm of rain. He said district and taluk level officials had been deputed for GP polls and it would take time to assess the extent of damage.
Shivamogga
Shivamogga received heavy rains for hours on Saturday night. Water gushed into low-lying areas . Several roads were also waterlogged while stormwater drains overflowed. Power supply was disrupted.
Hassan
Showers, accompanied by heavy winds, that hit the region on Friday evening, resulted in widespread damages in parts of Arsikere taluk, Hassan district.Parameshwarappa (30) was electrocuted when he came in contact with a live wire near Jyothimallapura village in the taluk. The wire had fallen on the road. Parameshwarapa was riding his two-wheeler when the incident occurred.
Chamarajanagar
Kollegal town in Chamarajanagar district heavy showers on Friday evening. Electrical wires were snapped as as coconut tree fell on them. A major disaster was averted as Bescom immediately cutoff the power supply.
