The commencement of monsoon has dampened Mallikette- Bendur concrete road work. With half done work and incessant rains, confusions raise in the minds of locals and they express doubts about continuation of the work and are worried about UGD facility.

It may be recalled that before the start of the work MLA J R Lobo had directed the corporation engineers to make provision for rainwater drain, underground drainage system and cables. According to Lesley Crasta, a resident of Mallikatte, the contractor and engineers have not followed the stipulated rules. Contractors say that they won’t get anything for additional works, he said.  |

In fact, there is no need for four-lane, but they are not ready to hear the pleas of common men. Three trees have been chopped at midnight. Diana Pinto, another localite showed the concrete which is piled up in the middle of the road and worried that it would be just waste of public money.  A senior engineer of MCC clarified that two utility ducts have been maintained and UGD connection will be provided after the concrete road work. Sufficient space will be available after 13 metre width road (one metre divider) and footpath.

A proposal of UGD connection from VAS bakery junction to Mallikatte junction worth around Rs 7 lakhs has been included in the action plan. However, it is not applicable for rain water drains or cable lines, he said.  To a query, he said that scarification of asphalt depends on height. If the road level is low there is no need of scarification. Rain water won’t affect the heaps on concrete as it is just used as bonding agent. Interestingly, he said that the because of the tree roots, the whole drainage system of the area has been affected.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, MLA J R Lobo said there is no question of compromise with the quality of work.
