A 28-year-old man was axed to death by a robber in north-east Delhi’s Sonia Vihar in the wee hours of Friday. The accused was overpowered and thrashed to death, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Chitranjan Kumar, who hailed from Bihar’s Sheohar district and lived with his elder brother’s family in Chauhan Patti village.

He owned a mobile recharge shop, while his elder brother Shiv owns a jewellery shop on the ground floor of their house.

Chitranjan and the robber were declared brought dead at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.
“The robber is yet to be identified. He seems to have made a plan to rob the jewellery shop,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Eastern Range) Sanjay Beniwal.

Shiv and his brother-in-law Raj Kumar also sustained injuries in the incident.
Police said the robber had gained entry into the first floor by climbing up a drainpipe on the building.
He was carrying a torch, rod, iron cutter and an axe. “Chitranjan was sleeping on the first floor,” another police officer added.

It is believed that Chitranjan was attacked when he tried to raise an alarm on noticing the accused in his room.

“Chitranjan was hacked to death with an axe,” the officer said. The robber ransacked the room and then went dowstairs, where Chitranjan’s elder brother Shiv was sleeping with his family.
Shiv also saw the robber and raised an alarm on which Shiv’s brother-in-law Raj Kumar rushed to the room.

“Fearing to be caught, the robber had also locked himself in a room,” the officer added.
As neighbours began to gather outside the house, the robber tried to flee.
He was, however, overpowered by Shiv and Raj Kumar.

It is alleged that he used his weapons and injured Shiv and Raj Kumar.
In a scuffle, the weapons were snatched from the robber to attack him back.
“The robber had several injury marks on his body. The axe was also used to attack him,” the officer said.

A case of murder and attempt to murder under Indian Penal Code has been filed with Sonia Vihar police station.

The robber’s body has been preserved for a post-mortem. He is around 35-years-old.
Local police have shared his photograph with the district police to identify him.
