Raitha Sangha to hold Sringeri bundh on February 2

Last Updated 22 January 2010, 17:38 IST

Bundh will be organised as a mark of protest and to urge the government for the distribution of compensation to arecanut growers, who suffered loss due to yellow leaf and other diseases in their farms. The decision to hold bundh was taken after holding discussion with the leaders of Congress, BSP and JD(S) at the TAPCMS Hall here on Friday.

Raitha Sangha leaders said that the yield in arecanut farms has reduced considerably due to yellow leaf disease. Following this, farmers are not in a position to repay the agriculture loans. Those politicians, who promised loan waiver during election campaigns, are now shying away from keeping their words after the formation of government. Hence, the bundh will be organised to awaken the government, they said.

Similarly, the government will also be urged for proper electricity supply and distribution of compensation to farmers for rain damages. Leaders said that the central government has already sent a team to study the yellow leaf disease problem. However, the state government still did not respond to the problems of farmers, they alleged.

Raitha Sangha leaders D B Rajendra, Maranakodige Nataraja, A B Vasappa Gowda, Sudheerkumar, Murolli Sathish, Belagula Chinthan, Navin Karavane, Congress leaders H G Venkatesh, A S Nagesh, Soubhagya Gopalan, JD(S) leaders H T Rajendra, K C Sathish Gowda and BSP leader B N Anand were present.
