The State-run transport corporations, BMTC and KSRTC, which have been incurring losses for the fifth consecutive year now, have managed to bring down their losses in 2014-15.

In 2013-14, the BMTC had projected a loss to the tune of Rs 150 crore, while in 2014-15 the losses came down to about Rs 65 crore. Similarly, KSRTC had incurred a loss of Rs 80 crore in 2013-14, which has come down to around Rs 42 crore in 2014-15.

Ekroop Caur, Managing Director, BMTC, said: “In 2013-14 alone, losses were about Rs 150 crore, which was brought down to about Rs  65 crore in the next fiscal. Besides, rationalising schedules, we have tried to keep cost under control by cutting down on taking up new work. Against the past practice of taking loans several times, in 2014-15 we took a loan only once.”

Rajender Kataria, Managing Director, KSRTC said: “The projected loss in 2014-15 was Rs 102 crore but the actual losses are less than Rs 50 crore- about Rs 42 crore. We have taken cost cutting measures, besides the cut in the fuel prices helped a lot. We have increased operational efficiency by cutting down on extra bus operations . Apart from this, we have reduced expenditureinfrastructure, cut down on staff by reshuffling the duties etc. However, if we get adequately paid for the due amount from the government, we will be in a comfortable position soon.”
