In an apparent softening of stand, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Tuesday demanded that the decision on the vexed Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid issue be expedited and dropped enough hints that it was ready to wait for the Supreme Court judgment on the matter.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the Ram Janmabhoomi Trust in Ayodhya, VHP international president Ashok Singhal, however, asked Muslims to “withdraw” their claims over Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya, Srikrishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura and Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi.

“The matter is in the court and the country is run in accordance with laws and Constitution...we cannot force the issue. We will wait for the verdict,” he said. The VHP leader also demanded facilities to pilgrims who go to Ayodhya.

He said that the VHP did not want to disturb peace and amity in the country. “Ram temple is a matter of faith for 100 crore hindus,” he said.

Former BJP MP Ram Bilas Vedanti, however, advocated tabling a bill in Parliament for the construction of the Ram temple.
