Yoga unites young and old in city

 Hundreds of students turned up early morning and performed different asanas at Tyagraj Stadium to mark the International Yoga Day on Sunday.

Also, the employees and trainees of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation performed yoga asanas at the its training school in Shastri Park.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has organised a function at Tyagraj Stadium in Lodi Colony to celebrate the International Yoga Day.

Some 4,000 students including children from South Corporation schools enjoyed the yoga performances. The instructors demonstrated 21 different yoga asanas like ‘kapal bhati’, ‘pranayam’ and ‘shabhavi’ positions, among others. During the end of the session, children performed ‘tar’, ‘vriksh’, ‘padhast’ and ‘trikon’ asanas.

Parents accompanying the children could also be seen performing asanas in the open spaces on the premises. “We would want our children to perform these asanas daily as they are not only a good exercise but they will also help them to develop a sound mind,” said a parent.
Member of Parliament Meenakshi Lekhi said that the programme organised by the south civic agency is inspirational and motivational step towards making a child healthy. “Yoga asanas help in keeping our body healthy, physically as well as mentally.”

Member of Parliament Ramesh Bidhuri said that yoga is acts a stress buster. “If one wants to get some relief from stress, yoga is one of the best stress relievers. It will help in keeping our society healthy.”

Mayor of the South Corporation Subhash Arya said, “The performance of our children is really motivating. They are future of our country and if they have a healthy body and sound mind they can build a strong India.”

The programme ended with ‘sankalp’ and ‘shanti paath’ mantras. Leader of House in South Corporation Ashish Sood, Additional Commissioner G S Meena and other senior officers were also present. The function was presided over by the area councillor Kusum Lata.

Yoga was performed at events across the world, from New York to Trinidad and Tobago, from the Maldives to Australia, from Tel Aviv to Moscow, from on board naval ships to Siachen glacier.
