Manipur government said on Tuesday that it would soon come up with a stringent law to deal with frequent bandhs and economic blockades even as the All Tribal Students Union Manipur announced an indefinite strike on all highways from Tuesday.

The organisation also threatened to disrupt all national projects including the construction of rail lines if  their  demands of more jobs for the tribals are not fulfilled.

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam told reporters in Imphal that the state government has conducted a review of the situation owing to the economic blockade and it feels that economic blockade “is violation of human rights and undemocratic”.

Need for law

He also said that the government is of the view that stringent law should be framed to stop the “culture of blockades and counter blockades”.

Meanwhile, in Imphal valley people were seen stocking essential food items, gas cylinders and fuel.
