Ration cards will be distributed by February

73,278 families have been enrolled under MGREGS

Delivering the Republic Day message on Tuesday at Nehru Maidan, Palemar said that so far as many as 1,73, 960 BPL cards and 1,98,116 APL cards have been distributed in the district. Remaining 23,521 cards will be distributed by next month and all steps will be taken to rectify the errors that have occurred in the cards, in future.

With regard to Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, he said that so far as many as 73,278 families have enrolled under the scheme and job cards have been given to 71,082 families. As many as 10,042 works have been taken up in the district at the cost of Rs 795 lakh producing 6 lakh man days of works.

‘Saura Belaku’

Palemar said that government has selected Dakshina Kannada district for implementation of its new programme named ‘Saura belaku’ for the year 2009-10. It has set a target of installing 178 solar street lamps at a cost of 50 lakhs.
Accordingly, 10 GPs have been selected (2 GPs from each taluk) and 53 solar street lamps have been installed at a cost of Rs 12 lakh so far, he informed.

He further said that Rs 399 lakh has been spent out of Rs 770 lakh earmarked for rural drinking water in the district. As many as 6,923 persons have been approved with old age pension, 12,595 with disability allowance, 23, 823 with widow pension and 13,962 with Sandhya Suraksha scheme.

Prior to this Palemar hoisted the Indian Flag and received the guard of honour. As many as 15 troupes including Police Band, KSRP, DARP, civil police, NCC Army Senior/Junior, NCC Air Wing Senior/Junior, NCC Naval Senior/Junior, Scouts, Guides, traffic police and Bharath Seva Dal took part in the march past during the celebration. Students from various school from the city danced to the tunes of several patriotic songs. Many vintage cars were also exhibited during the programme.

Felicitation

Sixteen students who have excelled in various fields were felicitated during the programme along with 9 farmers.

Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj, Superintendent of Police Dr A Subramanyeshwar Rao, IGP Gopal Hosur, Municipal Commissioner Dr K N Vijayprakash, Zilla Panchayat Chief Santhosh Kumar Bhandary, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLC Ganesh Karnik, Mayor M Shanker Bhat, MLAs U T Khader, Yogish Bhat and others were present.
