An awareness campaign, launched by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) against the anti-people policies of the Union and State governments, entered the taluk on Monday.

The party activists held protests at different parts of the town and the taluk as part of the campaign.

The party’s district unit secretary M P Munivenkatappa said, “The BJP-led NDA government has completed one year rule at the Centre. But the country’s economic condition has not improved. Unemployment and poverty is increasing. The price of essential items is going up.The Union government is changing the law and pledging the country with multinational companies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi toured foreign countries with the ambitious ‘Make in India’ declaration. But not even four per cent of the total 1.2 crore job aspirants have not got jobs.”

“The government is trying to stop National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) scheme. It is cheating the people by drastically cutting the grants being provided to education, health, social security and other sectors. Education has become a commodity. The poor and needy are not getting quality treatment in government hospitals. Private hospitals have crossed all limits and are engaged in profit making business,” he alleged.

Munivenkatappa said the State government has proved the people’s beliefs false. It is not taking steps to prevent farmer suicides. The government has not implemented policies in favour of farmers, labourers and women, he charged.

He demanded a permanent irrigation project based on Dr G S Paramashivaiah report for the region. NREGA scheme should be properly implemented in the district and a probe should be ordered into the irregularities in the scheme, he said.

The government should take necessary steps to protest the interest of silk and dairy farmers and establish agriculture-based industries. It should stop atrocities against women and children. Steps should also be taken to prevent dengue and other deadly fever, he stated.

Senior leaders of the party Kundalagurki K M Venkatesh, Mallur Shivanna, K C Venkatesh, K S Veeranna, Venkatarayappa, B N Munikrishnappa of Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha, Democratic Youth Federation of India State leader Kundalagurki Muneendra, Students Federation of India district unit president Rajashekhar and others were present on the occasion.
