The eastern metropolis was thrown off gear on Monday evening when thousands of madrasa students took to the streets in a sudden demonstration at several parts of north Kolkata.

The agitating students were protesting against the arrest of a fellow student, who was arrested from Sealdah station on Sunday evening for traveling on a train without a valid ticket.

The situation turned somewhat volatile and tension prevailed for hours from around 3 pm as thousands of madrasa students demonstrated at various important street crossings across north and central Kolkata, squatting on the road and some even lying down on prayer mats and bed sheets. While details remain sketchy, eye witnesses reported that there were no police personnel in sight and no one stopped them from leaving Kolkata virtually stranded.
