Film awards under scanner

The High Court on Tuesday summoned N R Vishukumar, Director, Information and Public Relations, with regard to a petition filed by S Radha against the films picked for State awards for 2009-2010, on Aug 10.

Justice S Abdul Nazeer asked if it was possible to withdraw the list of films selected for the awards for that year.

The petitioner’s advocate contended that every year the selection committee makes such mistakes, filmmakers bribe for subsidy and there are irregularities in selecting the films. Though the last date for sending nominations was over, a list of 14 films was sent to the committee, which is a blatant violation of the norms laid down by the competent authority.

The government submitted the committee had used its discretionary power to select the films. The court replied that discretionary power does not mean the committee can act as per its whims and fancies and demanded why the awards for 2009 were given in 2012.
