In an effort to bring orderliness at autorickshaw stands and ensure more stands to cater to the growing population, the city police have identified 86 new places to set up stands, taking the total number of stands to 174 in the city.

According to Police Commissioner B Dayananda, a minimum of four passenger autorickshaws to a maximum of 25 can be parked at a time in the stands henceforth, to facilitate smooth movement of traffic in the interest of the general public.

The revised notification, issued on August 4, has made some changes in the existing notification that had identified 99 stands. In the revised order, 11 places, against the total places earlier identified for the stands, have been dropped, bringing down the number to 88.

In the recent notification, an additional 86 places were identified, taking the total to 174 stands.

This follows a proposal from the office of the ACP (traffic) to the police commissioner, to identify places (including the existing and new places) following rapid urbanisation, eroding the gap between residential and commercial areas in the city.

ACP (traffic) K N Madaiah told Deccan Herald that there has been an increase in the number of autorickshaws and also stands ever since a previous notification was issued in the year 1994.

“A total of 99 stands were legalised then. But the new stands had come up in later years, sans legality. Taking this into consideration, the transport operators were taken into confidence before revising the list. A total of 11 stands were deleted from the list, as they had been merged with the neighbouring stands, following road widening and installation of traffic signals among other civic works,” he said.

The officer said, for example, the transport operators at Dasappa Circle had voluntarily merged with the stand near the railway station, following the road widening works, with no place for the stand.

Accordingly, the stands have been identified at under five traffic police stations limits — Devaraja, Krishnaraja, Narasimharaja, Siddhartha Nagar and V V Puram. The highest of 50 stands are located under Siddhartha Nagar, followed by 38 at Krishnaraja, 33 - V V Puram, 29 - Narasimharaja and 24 - Devaraja.

Taking into cognisance the frequent movement of people in the central business district (CBD) that includes hospitals and hotels with lodging facilities and also places of tourist interest, where people are largely dependent on public transport, the stands have been left undisturbed.

At the pre-paid auto stand adjacent to the compound of a church near the KSRTC sub-urban bus stand on Bengaluru-Nilgiri road, permission has been given for 300 three-wheelers.
