Avani shines in US

Avani Prashanth of Greenwood High International School finished a creditable fourth in the girls’ under-8 category at the US Kids Golf World Championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

The eight-year-old third standard student, who has competed in events on the domestic IGU events, opened with 36 before carding a 35 in the second round.

Things didn’t go too well for her in the final round but she managed to card 37 to sign off level-par 108 at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club.

American Chloe Kovelesky emerged champion in the under-8 category, dishing out rounds of 32, 34, 35 for a total of 101. Compatriot Avery Zweig finished second three shots behind at 104 while Mariana Rodriguez Chavez took bronze after totalling 105.

A total of 70 golfers from various countries took part in this category which was played over 27 holes (nine per round). Avani started learning golf at the age of four under Nathan Sundaram. Currently she trains at the Eagleton Golf Academy under Abdul Raheem KH.
