Nimhans shootout: Four CAR constables suspended for laxity

Last Updated 18 August 2015, 19:35 IST

Four constables of the City Armed Reserve (CAR) will be suspended for dereliction of duty that led to a mentally ill prisoner grabbing a .303 rifle of one of them and going on a shooting spree at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans) here on Sunday.

Head constable Nanjundappa and constables Sharanappa Ningappa Wadagera, Manjunath and Mohan Aradhya will be suspended, a senior police officer said. “They violated the Karnataka police manual. Due to their dereliction of duty, they will be suspended and questioned about the lapses. The orders are being readied,” the officer added.

Investigation has found that only one constable was present during the incident while others were nowhere in sight. “As per the manual, the head constable can take rest from noon to 6 pm while other constables should be on their rounds and carry out their duty. The head constable should make sure that when he is going for rest, others should be around,” the officer said. “We will take strict action to ensure such incidents do not recur. CAR constables will be given strict orders.”
