Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy has called upon the youth to shun apathy and become proactive in solving the problems of society, instead of expecting others to do it.

Addressing graduates at the 65th annual convocation of Karnatak University in Dharwad on Wednesday, he said hard work and short-term sacrifices were essential for long-term glory.

Murthy, while giving a realistic picture of the extent of illiteracy, malnutrition, poverty, sickness and lack of sanitation facility, said that for the first time in 300 years, there was an economic environment that engendered confidence that India could indeed overcome her poverty and create a better future for every Indian. He maintained that idealism, confidence, hope, energy and enthusiasm were mandatory for every Indian, if we have to fulfil the dreams of the founders of this nation.

“There are significant changes around me that tell me that the youngsters of today will dispel the darkness around us and make this a better country for everyone of us,” Murthy said. Governor Vajubhai Vala, who is also the chancellor of the university, presented gold medals to the students.
