She was crowned Miss Universe while still in her teens. She adopted a child five years down the line. And she is now a mother of two after her second adoption. And one meeting with her can make you her fan for life.

As a fiercely independent woman who likes to make her own rules, Sushmita Sen oozes oomph and intellect in equal doses. A rarity in the entertainment industry. Sushmita has already managed to prove her mettle in Bollywood, thanks to her roles in the super-hit Main Hoon Na and the critically-acclaimed Chingari, besides many other films.

The actress will be seen as a reality show judge and will share the stage with actors Shekhar Suman and Sonu Sood for Comedy Superstar on Sab TV. This is not Sushmita’s first time on television. She has judged a celebrity dance show earlier. So what made her take up the comedy show? The actress explains, “I love pure comedy. I don’t like humour with double meaning. This show is a platform for artistes who know everything about comedy and can entertain audiences with their craft.”

So what are her favourite comedy shows? She thinks for a while before answering, “I like Comedy Nights With Kapil. I have watched a few episodes of the show. I also love the way Boman Irani does comedy on screen. And I am a big fan of Johnny Lever as well. But I have always preferred films over television.”

Sushmita is known for her natural expressions. So how does she react to a funny act? “When someone is making me laugh or something is really funny, I just let go and enjoy the moment.” Talking about her co-judges Shekhar Suman and Sonu Sood, Sushmita adds, “Shekhar is so knowledgeable. He can be the man of all seasons. He has answers to everything. I have also learnt a lot of pure Hindi from him. Sonu, on the other hand, is a rock star. I have enjoyed my time with both of them. I am the sort of person who always wants to prioritise things according to the project I work for. And I can say that Comedy Superstar is a show where I have given my 100 percent.”

The discussion somehow wavers to her personal life and her two daughters. And the wide grin on her face is evident. “For my daughters, I play both the roles of a father and mother. I can be strict and I can be lenient as well depending on the situation. It’s been the most courageous thing I have done in my life. I feel I have become a different person with a different personality and a more beautiful heart.”

Although Sushmita is busy, she makes sure she has enough time for her daughters. “My favourite time with them is usually when we are travelling. That is when we get away from our daily routine. So my favourite time with them is to teach them things in a fun way and show them real life as opposed to reel life.”

Her elder daughter Renee wants to become an actress and Sushmita says, “I want my kids to complete their studies. I never want them to say that we only want to act and do nothing apart from that. So they have to complete their basic education first and after that it’s their choice completely.”

She has had an interesting life. How about writing a memoir? Sushmita responds, “Someday I would like to do that. I have been asked about this several times. The day I really feel the need or desire to write, there will surely be a memoir.”

So what next for the actress? “I want to do a film now. It’s been a really long time and my fans also want to see me back on screen. I am waiting for a good script. I want to give the audiences a film to remember me by.”
