'Let Sania decide her Rio partner'

The mixed doubles event at the Olympic Games has stirred unrest in India in recent past. With Sania Mirza being the only top woman player from the country, there has always been a fight on who she would partner in the mega event. With the Rio Games round the corner, the issue is piquing the interest.

Rohan Bopanna, the world No 13 men’s doubles player, said it would be Sania's call. In 2012, the Hyderabadi had paired with Paes. It, however, had been preceded by a bitter episode also involving Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi.

“In mixed doubles, it is up to Sania to take that decision. She is No 1 in the world, she is out there playing the best tennis of her life. So she has to make that call on who she wants to play with or who she is comfortable with,” said Bopanna when asked who Sania would be partnering.

“Obviously, I want to play with Sania, Leander wants to play with Sania, so it depends on who she wants to play with,” he added with a laugh.

In the men’s doubles, Paes is expected to partner Bopanna. “Of course, if you take Rio, apart from Leander and me there is no one else playing doubles. If I am not mistaken, to qualify for the Olympics you have to be a combined 60 or 65 (in the rankings). So there is no other player in that category,” said Bopanna.

‘Hingis factor’
Meanwhile, Sania has enjoyed a lot success with Martina Hingis since joining forces this March last said that her partnership with the Swiss great will continue in the next season.

“Yes, we are going to play next year as well,” she said but is not sure whether she would like to continue playing mixed doubles with Brazilian Bruno Soares, with whom she won 2014 US Open. “At this point, I am not sure about Bruno, we have to see a few things.”
