Tension prevailed at Seegehalli, off KR Puram, on Sunday night during the Ganesha idol immersion procession when the BJP and the Congress workers clashed and resorted to stone throwing.

The police said the trouble started when BJP workers along with local leader Sundar Raj, who was defeated in the recent BBMP elections by a margin of 10 votes, were taking out a Ganesha idol procession at Seegehalli. Some BJP workers reportedly shouted slogans against the KR Puram MLA Byrathi Basavaraj of the Congress. This irked Congress workers and a clash ensued.

The KR Puram police intervened and some political party workers also pelted stones at the police in which an assistant Sub-Inspector sustained minor injuries. Later, senior police officials pacified the groups and they were taken to the police station.

A senior police official said that a complaint and a counter complaint has been lodged and FIRs were registered.  “Based on the complaint by both the party workers FIR has been registered for provocative slogans. Corporators Jaiprakash and Srikanth Gowda of the Congress and Sundar Raj and thier supporters had taken part in the procession,'' the officer said.
