A novel programme, Clean and Green Ward, was initiated under the leadership of corporator Rajaneesh at Derebail South ward on Sunday.

As a part of the programme, people were involved in keeping the surroundings clean. People from Kottara, Ladyhill and Kapikad zones formed teams and visited every household to create awareness on the proper disposal of garbage. Even handouts were distributed on the seggregation of garbage from the source.

As a part of the initiative, the residents were also asked to grow saplings and to maintain the surroundings green and clean.

Later, all the volunteers gathered at Lady Hill English Higher Primary School and vowed to keep their ward and Mangaluru city clean.

Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo administered the oath of cleanliness to the citizens of Derebail South ward during the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, the MLA said that the drive was a important step towards making Mangaluru a clean city.

Corporator Rajaneesh said that he had identified eight places in the ward for beautification. “I have plans to beautify unused public places that are not kept clean. The cleanliness drive will be taken up with the help of donors. We have also created a WhatsApp group for the purpose. There are 60 members in the group. Our aim is to create awareness among all the residents.”

MLC Ivan D’Souza, Mayor Jacintha Vijay Alfred, and others were present.
