Models bring out best in young scientists

Why can’t we hold an umbrella to protect earth from cosmetic rays?’ ‘What are the benefits of laughter?’ These are some of the topics highlighted at the model exhibition held as part of Imprints 2010, a national-level science fest held at St Aloysius College in Mangalore on Wednesday. More than 15 colleges had exhibited over 50 exhibits on the occasion.

St Aloysius College students explained how antifreeze protein (AFP) helps animals to survive in  subzero environments and how can it be used in the preparation of ice cream. The importance of root canal treatment, use of algae to control green house effect, how clouds are formed, the simple methods of food preservation are other models exhibited.

A student Rakesh explained how laughter helps in wipes out sadness in a person. How to make use of the technology to switch off the pump once the tank is filled, how to produce electrcity from Padmapathra, cactus? How to track a vehicle owner who drives rashly on the road, is it possible to re use e-wastes? are some of the models displayed by the students.

A model on smart military technique used for deactivating the bomb attracted the attention of all.  Earlier, Scientist Prof Patrick Tauro inaugurated the Imprints.
