Three naxals were killed today in a gunbattle with security forces in Chhattisgarh's worst insurgency-hit Sukma district.

The skirmish took place between a joint squad of security forces and ultras in the forests of Arnampalli village under Polampalli police station limits, Sukma Additional Superintendent of Police Santosh Singh told PTI.

A joint team of Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA)- an elite wing of CRPF, Special Task Force (STF) and the state's District Reserve Group (DRG) was out on an anti-naxal operation since this morning in the region, located around 500 kms away from the state capital.

While they were cordoning off a forest axis between Arnampalli and Palamargu villages, a group of armed rebels opened indiscriminate firing on them following which they retaliated, the ASP said.

Rebels fled to the core forest after a gunfight that lasted for around two hours, he said.
Later during searches at the spot, bodies of three ultras, two of them in 'uniforms', besides two weapons were recovered, he said.

Further details of the incident would be known once the security forces return to their camp, he added.
