In the wake of the Somwarpet Town Panchayat decision to clear shops at the workshop area, the workers have urged the local administration to provide them an alternative facility.

In a meeting organised by the newly formed Workshop Labourers Association on the workshop premises on Thursday, leaders from different organisations and various political parties took part and discussed the problems faced by the workers.

Notices

The office-bearers of the association said that the Town Panchayat has issued notices to the workshops to evacuate the shops as the proposed commercial complex will come up in the industrial area.

“Though the workshop labourers have requested the Town Panchayat to provide alternative facilities, it has been of no use. Hence, the workshop labourers have decided to stage severe protests,” they said.

Congress leader V P Shashidhar said that the construction of the commercial complex would not assure the development of the town. “The administration has failed to hand over several commercial complexes built spending crores of rupees. Moreover, the construction quality is poor,” he complained.

Support to workers

BJP City unit president K G Suresh said that the evacuation of the workshop buildings would not be allowed and also warned that the members of the party would join hands with the movement of workers.

JDS leader V M Vijaya urged the Town Panchayat to identify some other land for the commercial building.

Jaya Karnataka taluk president Suresh Shetty said that the land identified by the Town Panchayat is a paisari land and the Panchayat has no right on it. The APMC President Satish said told the Panchayat to scrap the earlier resolution immediately.

No inconveniece

Town Panchayat President Leela Nirvani said that steps will be taken not to cause inconvenience to workers. “A decision will be taken in the next Town Panchayat meeting,” she promised.

Somwarpet Town Panchayat nominated member Hettur Rajanna, leaders of various organisations C C Nanda, Deepak, Krishnappa, Damodar, Ajish, Kibbetta and Madhu were present among others on the occasion.
