Happy with my contribution, says Kumble

Apart from removing N Srinivasan as the chairman of the International Cricket Council at its Annual General Meeting in Mumbai on Monday, the BCCI, also dropped senior selection committee member Roger Binny, replaced Anil Kumble with Sourav Ganguly as the Board’s Technical Committee chairman and left out team India director Ravi Shastri from IPL Governing Council, citing conflict of interest in all cases.

Kumble said he was happy with the contribution he made. “I believe, as part of the committee, I made a contribution to the game,” he noted.

“Yes, it is for others to judge but personally I am happy with what I did. As for the position, these are not held in perpetuity and there are tenures,” remarked Kumblewho held the position from October 2012, interestingly, after replacing Ganguly.

Kumble is being dragged into conflict interest controversy for some time now though he has made his position clear with regards to his company Tenvic. The former India captain, through Tenvic, doesn’t manage commercial interests of players (they come from all sports and not just cricket). He, along with other stakeholders, helps the youngsters, especially those coming from modest backgrounds and rural areas, cope with the pressures and challenges of cutthroat competition that sport throws up at the highest level by offering them guidance from experts.

At the post AGM press-do, all that the Board secretary Anurag Thakur could say was “Sourav is the new chairman” after a prolonged smile when he was asked about the reason behind replacing Kumble. It was not understandable as to how his association with Tenvic or even Mumbai Indians, which Thakur tried to point out, is a cause for conflict of interest because, as chairman of technical committee which is an honorary job, all that Kumble could do was recommend playing conditions and rules.
