Five days after it was opened in a high-security area in Lutyens' Delhi, North Avenue police station registered its first case on Wednesday – theft of sanitaryware from a toilet meant for security guards.

The staff at nearby South Avenue police station, which opened on November 6, had to wait for six days to get their first FIR. North Avenue police station’s first case is about a theft at Amar Ujala newspaper’s 1, Pandit Pant Marg office on Diwali night.

Security guard Sudhakar Pandey had filed the complaint. He was on night duty from 8 pm to 8 am.
“Sudhakar went to sleep inside the office at around 2 am. The theft was noticed when he woke up at around 6 am on Wednesday,” said a police officer.

In his statement, Sudhakar told police that some sanitaryware was missing from a toilet on the premises. A team under sub-inspector Ved Prakash has been formed to nab the thief in the case under section 380 (theft in dwelling house) of the Indian Penal Code.

“The team is trying to get clues from CCTV camera footage. Prima facie, it appears that the theft could be the handiwork of vagabonds who sell to scrap dealers,” the officer added.

The police station was inaugurated by Bharatiya Janata Party MP Arjun Ram Meghwal and Delhi Police Commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi on November 6.

“The police station has been set up keeping in view the high security area around North Avenue,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Jatin Narwal. North Avenue has MP residences, Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and several Central government offices in its jurisdiction.

South Avenue police station has under its jurisdiction the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Vice-President's house, Vigyan Bhavan and homes of several MPs.
