<p>Assembly Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa on Monday directed newly appointed Bengaluru Development Minister K J George to submit a report to the House on the measures taken to tackle the garbage menace in the city.</p>.<p><br />The direction from the chair came during a discussion on garbage disposal in Bengaluru. <br /><br />The Speaker suggested that a meeting of all the legislators from Bengaluru and officials of civic agencies be held in the next three to four days to find a permanent solution to the State capital’s garbage problem.<br /><br />Earlier, BJP members in the Assembly blamed the government for lack of preparedness to manage garbage. <br /><br />“There is no clarity on what steps are being taken to clear garbage in Bengaluru. There has been inordinate delay in setting up garbage pro-cessing units. The BBMP <br />is not equipped to manage the 4,000 tonnes of garbage generated in Bengaluru <br />every day,” B N Vijay Kumar (BJP) said.<br /><br />Ravi Subramanya said the City was sitting on a garbage time bomb that would explode anytime. <br /><br />Disease outbreak<br />Uncleared garbage was the main reason for the outbreak of dengue and other diseases, he said. <br /> <br />Suresh Kumar said the nexus between garbage contractors and BBMP officials was the reason for the garbage crisis.<br /><br />In his reply, George said the government had recently signed an MoU with a Dutch consortium to manage 600 metric tonnes of the City’s solid waste every day. More waste-to-energy plants would come up in the city soon, he said.<br /><br />George said seven solid waste processing plants would soon become operational in Bengaluru and the garbage menace would reduce drastically.<br /><br />The process of recruiting 4,000 pourakarmikas would be completed soon, he added.<br /><br /></p>
