Assembly Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa on Monday directed newly appointed Bengaluru Development Minister K J George to submit a report to the House on the measures taken to tackle the garbage menace in the city.

The direction from the chair came during a discussion on garbage disposal in Bengaluru.

The Speaker suggested that a meeting of all the legislators from Bengaluru and officials of civic agencies be held in the next three to four days to find a permanent solution to the State capital’s garbage problem.

Earlier, BJP members in the Assembly blamed the government for lack of preparedness to manage garbage.

“There is no clarity on what steps are being taken to clear garbage in Bengaluru. There has been inordinate delay in setting up garbage pro-cessing units. The BBMP
is not equipped to manage the 4,000 tonnes of garbage generated in Bengaluru
every day,” B N Vijay Kumar (BJP) said.

Ravi Subramanya said the City was sitting on a garbage time bomb that would explode anytime.

Disease outbreak
Uncleared garbage was the main reason for the outbreak of dengue and other diseases, he said.

Suresh Kumar said the nexus between garbage contractors and BBMP officials was the reason for the garbage crisis.

In his reply, George said the government had recently signed an MoU with a Dutch consortium to manage 600 metric tonnes of the City’s solid waste every day. More waste-to-energy plants would come up in the city soon, he said.

George said seven solid waste processing plants would soon become operational in Bengaluru and the garbage menace would reduce drastically.

The process of recruiting 4,000 pourakarmikas would be completed soon, he added.
